Don't wait too long to reserve your seats for concerts - they almost always sell out in advance...  Please postdate checks to the day of the concert as they go to the artist at that time.

A Quick Question...

  #

Hey... would yáll be up for a $35 concert here with Colin Hay?   Who is he you ask?   Think back to the early 80s... I know you're folkies, but think about pop music, think about:  MEN AT WORK!!!  Yes, Colin was the lead singer there, and a friend of ours saw him recently in Denver and said that this was a "must have" concert.   VERY entertaining...

Colin doesn't normally do this sort of thing, but his LA agent said that for about $35 a head, we can get him here.   I think that it would be ANOTHER wonderful evening.

(We want to do this partly because my daughters want to see him so badly.   YES, 80s popstars are now popular with her generation!   Colin has 3 songs on the latest Scrubs (TV program) album...  But - it's more expensive than our recent shows, so we wanted to check with you first...)

Humbled

  #
First off - a HUMUNGOUS thank you to everyone that took note of our last minute plea & showed up for the show.  What a great community to be part of!

Every time that I consider getting out of the house concert business, I'm going to think back on the Terri Hendrix & Lloyd Maines concert.  I'd never seen them live before, so my expectations were about normal:  another night of good music.  Before the concert, I couldn't gush over them, other than the fact that Lloyd won a Grammy Award (YES a Grammy Award) for his production of the Dixie Chick's "Home".

Terri & Lloyd would have knocked my socks off IF I wasn't always barefoot at these concerts!  I felt like Bob Wills was in the house, like the New Leviathan Oriental Fox-Trot Orchestra stopped by and it was all peppered with a social consciousness & spirituality that I hope to aspire to.  To say nothing of the monster player that Lloyd is on any instrument he chooses to pick up.  Perhaps the most unforgettable part of the evening was the encore with Brendan, Maddie, Terri & Lloyd.   Maddie's scat was NOT that of a 16 year old and I just kept watching Lloyd signal Terri to let Brendan take another turn.   It was a fitting end to a magical evening.   It's all about expanding community.

This concert was definitely up there among my favorites, but poor Marc was working so hard on the sound board that I don't think he enjoyed it as much as I did.  We all owe him a huge round of applause for taking on sound for the master...

AND... a huge thanks to Laura & Chris WITHOUT WHOM we could never do this.  They make sure that our kitchen doesn't look like a bomb went off, they handle the CD sales for the artists and make our lives easier.  (this also extends to Joe & Kristen!!)

Dear Friends,

  #

We hope all is well with you.  Spring seems to want to come out, but just can't keep to a schedule.   We wanted to remind you that we're less than 2 weeks away from the Mike Dowling concert.   He's regularly on Prairie Home Companion - an incredible entertainer.  We're not quite sure why, but there are still seats available, so get your checks in!   There are only 2 seats open in the workshop.

Just a quick heads up to y'all.   We hope to see you at Mike Dowling's concert because we're going to slow concerts down here during the summer.  We have large commitments to the girls' sports teams & TESSA is moving offices and our safehouse.  There is much money to be raised for the event, so Whitney's doing double time.

Community & Willy Porter Pictures

  #
As we close out the year here, we just want to say thanks to those of you who come together to form the community around Friends House Concerts.  It's been another great year with you and we appreciate all the support that you've given this year.   We're trying to figure out something for the 50th concert next year and believe me, we're shooting for the moon!

I think that my dad once said that he who dies with the best stories wins...  And where do those stories come from?  They come from community.  From the bonds that we form with people at work, at church  at play, or from our children's school.  There are so many unique & talented people that make up our community here at FHC.

Speaking of community -
here is a bunch of shots from the night of the Willy Porter concert.  Wait until you have some time to look at these... almost 70 photos from evening!

A MAJOR thanks Wendy Pearce Nelson who donated her services for the night, even when she was backed up at work just returning from her honeymoon!  We were struck by how accurately she captured the mood of the evening and humbly thank her for her addition to the community here...  You should think about her for any photos you need taken.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Again, a big hats off to our new friends over at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.  Bif & Patti did a marvelous job bringing everything together at the last minute.  The zookeepers were super for bringing the beer & even letting Eliza feed the giraffes.

We would love to hear your feedback on the evening.  Drop a quick line or log into the site with your comments & we'll try to see what we can come up with for the future...  We hope you all enjoyed the evening as much as we did.  Wasn't Eliza just super?  Did I NOT TELL YOU that this would be a great concert?!?!

Cooling Down The Concerts - Update

THANK you to the response for help on the swamp cooler.   You are all wonderful!  As I write this, Marc is over with the folks at a local contractor seeing what needs to be done.   We should be up and running for the July 6th concert.

Executive Decision Made

  #
Looking at the weather predictions going forward, it's clear that we are in for another unseasonably hot weekend.  As much as I desperately wanted to have Eliza here at the house, the predicted highs in the 90's would make for a rather uncomfortable concert here with a full band up front and a full house.  One of our fans has garnered us a cool spot at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and we're going to take him up on it.  Thank you Cheyenne Mountain Zoo & thank you Biff!!

CHANGE OF VENUE for Sunday's concert:  We WILL NOT be at the Luckett's, but over at the air-conditioned Safari Lodge at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.  We can't think of a more perfect spot to have the concerts.  Imagine a giraffe peering in the window at you as a full band plays up front...

We've managed to also be able to continue on bringing in our own food & drink - so I expect you to kick it up a notch for our fancy digs on Sunday night.

Here is a map to the Zoo and there will be signs posted guiding you to the Safari Lodge (down in the yellow zone).  It's over on the far side of the giraffe area.

Cooling Down The Concerts

  #
TEMPERATURE NOT QUALITY!!!

We were reminded at the last concert (still with the temperatures in the 70's) that the house can heat up really quickly when you add 100 people to it.  As you have no doubt noticed, we don't have air conditioning and wouldn't really need it except for concerts.

If anyone out there has a good solution - let us know. We are trying to problem solve this and a swamp cooler seems like a good idea.  Because of the openess of the space, we need a fairly big one.  We've located one on-line that might work.   At this point, if we can get friends to chip in for at least 1/2 of the $850 unit, Marc & I will pay for the balance.  A check made out to the Luckett's would be great to help us out on this.  We won't cash any checks until we have the full 50% in hand.

Speaking of global warming, did anyone see the trailer to An Inconvenient Truth?   It's certainly thought provoking - and making me think that we need the swamp cooler all the more...

Thanks to you ALL who supported our 2 sold out shows in 8 days.  Marc & I are not planning on doing that again anytime soon...  Luckily for us, the second show with Zoe was one of the easiest groups of musicians to get along with.  They helped set up chairs and clean up, not to mention that they were all phenomenal musicians in their own right.

Zoe was (as usual) a band in a body, but then to have Mannheim Steamroller's woodwinds player AND 2 incredibly talents side musicians?!  Julie Wolf who sat in on a couple of shows is currently touring w/ Dar Williams and just popped in to see her sister.  The good news there is that she's going to put together another 2 shows for our 2006 season, big names, but I want to see her on the bill too.  What a great evening!  Good thing, because Willy put on such an unforgettable show the week before that I wouldn't have wanted to come in after him.  Willy wrote something in our book about bail money & hookers, but DID say that he wants to come back.  He's certainly welcome here...

Matt & Sarah were there to capture the Zoe concert in pictures - THANK YOU!!  Here are the pix:

No Promises....

  #

Remembering that this wonderful series is a community effort - I come to you with my most recent dilemna.  Nothing firm yet, but in the wake of the Willy Porter concert - I felt that I needed to do something for Marc and Jorma Kaukonen is one of his all time favorites.  Well...it appears that there MIGHT be a chance to get legends Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady here.  (Yes - that would be 2 Rock & Roll Hall of Famers [Jefferson Airplane?!] right here at the house.)  The question is - could we draw the necessary $80 a seat to cover them here at the house - 100 seats, or should we look for $40 at an outside venue?  It's your call my friends!  Acoustic Hot Tuna anyone?

Please let me hear from you in the next couple of days on this on.  We have to make a decision...

House Concert Notes

Wasn't Christine Lavin incredible?!  Those lucky enough to join us were treated to a memorable evening.  Christine is amazing on so many levels, her attention paid to younger artists, her ability to connect with the audience, her showmanship, even her energy level.  We all had a great time and the evening epitomizes why we continue to do house concerts.

BUT... please remember that this is our home.  We open it up to you and ask that you treat it with respect.  If something spills - that's OK.  Please let us know and we can clean it up right away.  When we "discover" something the next day, it's too late...

Another Coup

  #

We successfully booked Willy Porter here this Fall.  We’re sure that the pressure from fans here is what finally threw it over the edge.  Willy’s guitar playing is “awesome wicked man” (oops… I guess I was in Hawaii a bit too long, huh?)  There is one caveat my friends, in order to keep bring y’all such good shows, we need to make sure that we have good showing across the board.  We’ll see you here soon, ja?

Despite this town's tendency towards last minute reservations, the September show for Christine Lavin is almost 50% sold out at this point.  We actually arrived home from vacation to find 6 messages about her concert alone.  Many of the checks received are not normal house concert goers.  If you have ANY interest in Christine – you really should get your check in pronto.  This could very well be the best concert of the season – she is without a doubt the most famous of our 2005 artists.   I've never been up close & personal with someone who Lincoln Center commissioned to compose and debut music.  Don’t’ get shut out of this one - remember seats are limited.

So.. did any of you catch the Weekend Edition Saturday show earlier this month.  How cool was it that BIG stars are coming out saying that they love the feel of the house concerts SO MUCH that they're trying to recreate the "home concert" feeling in major concert venues across the country?  Just on the cutting edge of things here in COS, we guess.  If you missed the story - give a listen here.

2 New Shows Scheduled

  #

As we gear up for the Roy Book Binder show in June – we’re excited to announce the addition of 2 other shows to our 2005 calendar (much to Marc’s chagrin!)   Erika called recently to give us a heads up on an up and coming young star saying that we really shouldn’t miss getting her before she hits the big time:  Natalia Zukerman.  Next – as we alluded to earlier – we set a firm date for Christine Lavin – right here at the Luckett house!  More on both concerts below…   We’re having a hard time saying no to great talent, so we have tentative dates for Willy Porter in October and Cheryl Wheeler in December.  We’ll let you know as we finalize these shows.

Thanks to all who came out Saturday for the Bernice Lewis Concert.  The spread downstairs was fit for a king.  Have I mentioned how great I think y'all are?!  Bernice struck a chord with the audience and premiered a song written right here in COS - Colorado Blue to an adoring audience.  Several barbs thrown at the men in the audience, but then I guess we ALL need wives these days!

We're glad to be back at home this month with MOST of the painting done.  Don't you just love the new sinks?!  I first saw them in my favorite hotel in Hamburg and haven't been able to stop thinking about them since.  We look forward to seeing you in the coming months.

Forward Tickets

If you have the least interest in any of our acts this year, please make sure that you get us a check MADE OUT TO THE ARTIST as soon as possible.  Catie Curtis' agent called because there are already fans calling them trying to get tickets for the November concert.  Both Storyhill & Roy Book Binder have big fan bases as well.

I want to give first priority to our regulars, but we do have limited seating here at the house and tickets are first come, first serve.  You should post date the checks, i.e put May 1st on Storyhill's check, etc.

We finally figured out what we were doing wrong on discussions. - you have to be logged in to post comments.  Y'all were set up on the site to recieve the newsletters, but not as registrants.  We did a blanket change, so you all need to do is log in here and request a password reminder and you can log in and post your comments.  You can change to a password of your own choosing right away.

Now you can comment all you like on the postings.  Sorry for any frustration we caused you.  There are 2 or 3 other concerts in the works, but we don't want to jinx them by mentioning them before they're a done deal.

P.S.  Whitney's off to surgery on Monday - so take it easy on us next week.  Now you know the reason for the burst of energy on the concerts below!
